The Complete Sierra See the Sierra Railway at the zenith of steam operations: first, the foundations on which the Sierra was built—gold, timber and hydro-power—and later when the railroad became holy grail for Hollywood westerns and the mecca of railroad enthusiasts worldwide. Exceptional filming by John F. Kirkland, Glenn Beier, Jim Vail, and Mac Owen.
Narrow Gauge East of the Sierra The fabled Southern Pacific narrow gauge steam trains crossed the desert reaches of California’s Owens Valley. Against a backdrop of soaring snow-capped peaks, the trains make their way to and from lonely mining operations at the foot of the mountains in the sparkling clear days of late Autumn. The line as it survived in 1960 is covered, including stations, bridges, water tanks, and turntables. Narrow gauge gondolas run up a specially-built trestle to dump into standard-gauge cars below. Enormous bars of silver, too heavy to steal, are piled at trackside to wait the train's arrival.
