Kids should like the action segments very much. It’s trains, trains and more trains. All steam trains. Passenger, freight, even some doubleheaders and light engine moves. I found the action, very enjoyable.

Hudsons Along the Hudson

The first 4-6-4 engine ever developed, they delivered the speed which powered the crack streamliners over the “water level route” from New York to Chicago. These beauties are seen racing along the shore of the Hudson River, and elsewhere around the system. The great luxury trains of the Central are all here: The Twentieth Century Limited, The Commodore Vanderbilt, The Pacemaker, The Empire State Express, and a dozen others. This feature was made from films that were old, but crystal clear. Only the best footage was used. Also includes brief views of hump yard and branch line operation. 30 minutes

I just had to tell you how magnificent the program entitled “Niagara’s and Mohawks” is. I especially enjoyed those shots...where the engine is being serviced prior to hauling one of the Centrals many limiteds.

Niagaras and Mohawks

One of the wonders of the steam locomotive world, The New York Central 4-8-4 Niagara—a locomotive so good it was an embarrassment to a railroad management that chose to embrace diesel power—is featured along with the Mohawk, the workhorse of steam that ruled the New York Central mainline for almost 20 years before the advent of the Hudson. An early morning parade of steam—commuters, mail and crack luxury trains—head down the shore of the Hudson River to New York City, transporting you trackside to an era few can remember! The DVD also shows the famous division point at Elkhart, Indiana where roller bearing Niagaras drifted though the yard with 5000 tons and exhaled barely a sigh, only to awake like bull elephants when they felt the mainline beneath their feet. The finale features “Gotham Steam” on the Erie and the Jersey Central in the 1940s and early ‘50s. 30 minutes

Of all the tapes I have purchased on trains, nothing equals the quality of “The Lightning Stripers.” Never before have I had the desire to write and simply say how much I enjoyed the “show.” You are to be commended for producing that kind of program.

Lightning Stripers

The Lighting Stripers—they are all here. More then half the tape is devoted to the world-renowned New York Central fleet of long haul streamliners—featuring the train of legend, The Twentieth Century Limited—and The New England States, The Empire State Express, The Pacemaker, The Commodore Vanderbilt, and dozens more. All of them are shown rocketing down the 4-track, 90 MPH raceway of the famed "water level" route. Passenger operations highlight 125th St. station, Mott Haven Yard and the Putnam branch. Freight operations show A-B-B-A lash ups on ore trains, solid refrigerator and Pacemaker freight. All the first diesels are shown: DES-2, FT, F3, E-8, the largest fleet of Alco PAs and FAs in the world, Baldwin Sharks and an FM C-liner, all of them covered wagons. The DVD includes the Aerotrain and the jet-propelled RDC doing 184 MPH. Pristine 16 mm footage shot by the railroad itself; 42 minutes.
